Durban – Police search and rescue divers may be forced to abort the second day of searching for two people presumed drowned after being swept into a river in Chatsworth on Saturday.

Three women and a 4-year-old girl had been washed into the flooding river while trying to cross it.

Officers, aided by specialised search and rescue dogs, on Saturday recovered the bodies of two of the women, which had had become entangled in dense bush and flotsam along the riverside

The search for the remaining woman and girl, who are presumed drowned, would continue in earnest on Sunday.

A dog from the Umhlali K9 Unit had searched about 3km of river on Saturday but was slightly injured in the process. With the dog needing rest, a second specialised K9 from Pietermaritzburg would continue the search.

But torrential rain and flooding throughout most of the city overnight could result in the search being postponed until it was safe to continue, officials said.
