Cape Town - The N1 has been reopened after a multiple-vehicle collision resulted in the highway being closed for three hours on Friday.

A helicopter landed on the N1 to airlift a woman involved in the three-vehicle collision, provincial traffic spokesperson Kenny Africa said.

This led to the closure of a section of the national road at the Klapmuts turn-off shortly after 10:00.

The cause of the accident was being investigated.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said five people were injured in the crash.

"Upon arrival, paramedics found the road congested with heavy traffic. A bakkie and SUV lay in the middle of the highway, while a light motor vehicle sat in the middle of the on-ramp. All three vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision," he said.

"On inspection, paramedics found one woman lying trapped inside her light motor vehicle, while another woman sat inside the bakkie. Three men were found lying in the middle of the collision scene."

The two women were critically injured and the three men were found in a serious condition.

"Rescue services went to work extricating the critically injured patient from the light motor vehicle, using specialised rescue equipment. Once freed, paramedics treated the patients and provided them with multiple advanced life support interventions," Meiring said.

They were taken to various hospitals for further treatment.
