Hiker, 71, rescued from Nature's Valley cliff face

Cape Town - An elderly hiker on holiday in Nature's Valley was rescued from a trail near the Salt River after the high tide cut off her path, the NSRI said on Tuesday.

The 71-year-old professional rock climber from Stellenbosch told friends on Monday afternoon that she had got stuck.

The NSRI’s Plettenberg Bay duty crew was dispatched at 17:10, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

The woman, Jean Myburgh, had left at 11:00 that morning to hike from Keurbooms to Nature's Valley. Her friends called her on her cellphone to check on her progress.

"It appears that Mrs Myburgh had reached Salt River, but with the high tide cutting off the regular trail she had climbed up the cliff face in an attempt to negotiate an alternative route," Lambinon explained.

She reached a point where she was unable to go further or climb down.

The NSRI then alerted the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), while they began a search by road from Salt River and in the vicinity of Oupa and Ouma.

"With daylight fading, local Plettenberg Bay pilot Rassie Erasmus volunteered his helicopter to assist in a search and a WSAR volunteer boarded the helicopter."

They found Myburgh almost immediately after they arrived in the area. She was unhurt and flown back to Nature's Valley.
