Durban – Police in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Monday arrested a hitchhiker accused of murdering an Eshowe school principal last week.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said the 23-year-old man was arrested during an operation by Eshowe detectives who were charged with investigating the killing.

"It is alleged that the 44-year-old victim, Busisiwe Nzuza, offered a lift to a hitchhiker from Empangeni towards Eshowe.

"While on the way, near Nkwalini, the hitchhiker allegedly produced a firearm and demanded the vehicle from the principal. He allegedly shot the victim [in] the head and [she] died instantly," Mbhele added.

The gunman then fled the scene on foot.
