We speak to South African musician, and The Voice SA judge Lira. Watch her weigh in on what's going through her mind when she doesn't turn around for a contestant on The Voice SA.WATCH

Pietermaritzburg - Flying the flag high for Pietermaritzburg is Austin Lurring, one of the 16 remaining contestants in the singing competition The Voice SA.

A 2013 matriculant at Carter High School, Lurring honed his skills even before singing in the school choir in Grade 9.

Described by many as a loveable, fun and humble young man, Lurring was hesitant to audition after not making it into Idols, but thanks to the encouragement of a friend, he auditioned for The Voice SA.

Lurring said he chose #TeamLira because he had followed Lira’s music from a young age. “I love her genre, and I knew I could learn much from her going forward.

“Facing Jeremy [during the Battle Round of the show] was intimidating. I was very nervous because of his experience, but that battle or experience helped me groom myself on stage and pushed me to believe in myself,” he said.

His highlights on the show include working with the coaches and a professional band, gaining stage experience, choosing performance clothing to suit a song, among others. “I’ve learnt so much about the industry and being a performer,” said Lurring.

His advice to aspiring musicians is to follow their passion. “Don’t do it for the money or fame as your true passion will die out,” he said.

“Stay humble, be open-minded, as you can learn from all kinds of music. This is the way you grow and this keeps your passion alive.”

To vote for Austin Lurring, SMS his unique voting number (SMS number 01) to 33692, or vote on the The Voice SA App at a cost of R1,50 per vote.

Voting closes today at 10 pm.

You can also vote on the official website and on Wechat at ID Mnettv. Online and Wechat votes are free, but data rates may apply.
