Pietermaritzburg - An Msunduzi Municipality employee made the grisly discovery of human skeletal remains on a vacant plot in Montrose on Monday.

The K9 Search and Rescue Unit was called to the scene after the council worker, who was cutting trees at Ann Stafford Drive in Montrose, spotted the remains.

Police estimate that the body might have been lying in the area for more than a year.

The skeleton was covered by a navy and grey jacket and a pair of trousers, but no shoes.

There was also a pair of trousers found next to the remains.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese encouraged families who have missing relatives to contact the police.
