Pretoria - For many matric pupils, passing was enough and getting a distinction a bonus, but not for a Ga-Rankuwa pupil with five A's.

"I'm pleased with what I have, but I could have done better if I went the extra mile. I know I could have done better," said Daniel Letsoalo from LG Holele Secondary School.

"I got 82.5% overall which is acceptable, and I also got my distinctions."

Letsoalo got 89% for Setswana, 73% for English, 74% for Mathematics, 90% for Life Orientation, 86% for Geography,  83% for Life Sciences, 79% for Physical Science, and 89% for Tourism.

Letsoalo said he put himself under pressure to achieve his dreams, and it took its toll mentally and physically.

The lack of sleep, compounded with having to walk 10km a day to school, was not easy.

"Sometimes I would leave school late and have to walk home, but I managed," he said.

He wanted to study medicine at the Sefako Makgatho University and make a difference in people's lives.

"I realise that medicine is a scarce skill in the country and I hope my hands will make a difference."
