Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance's Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba has said he could not stand on the sidelines and watch as the country moved in the wrong direction.

"When you are fortunate enough to have a successful business it's easy to become complacent," he told reporters in Johannesburg shortly after DA leader Mmusi Maimane announced his candidacy on Saturday.

"I couldn't watch the country move in the wrong direction from the sidelines."

Mashaba who is a businessman and the founder of Black Like Me said that when the DA first suggested he take up a political role he resisted.

At the time he said he could not see what would make him want to change his focus from business to politics, however he realised there were many common elements.

Mashaba said he believed the DA could give South Africa the best future.

As the party's mayoral candidate he did not expect people to give him a blank cheque.

He said he would use the leadership qualities he used to run Black Like Me as Johannesburg's mayor.

"Since 1994 Johannesburg has experienced some progress, however corruption, hollow promises, poor implementation and insufficient governance is holding us back.

"If elected I want to re-establish Joburg as financial capital of South Africa," Mashaba said.
