NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said rescue volunteers had been notified of the shark encounter shortly after 08:00.

“Five men, all locals from Plettenberg Bay, reported that while paddling on a regular paddle one of the surf-skis had been pushed from behind violently, causing the paddler, Dave Manson, to be thrown out of the surf-ski,” he said.

Speaking to News24, Manson said he was taken completely by surprise.

“He hit me from behind and I didn’t even see the shark,” he said.

“I would like to try and take this out of my mind,” he added.

Manson said that the shark had torn into the rear of the paddle-ski, ripping about 12 inches (30cm) off the back near the skegs.

“I don’t feel like I had a brush with death. I don’t want to sound overly casual about it but I was taken by surprise. It pushed the boat up and then I fell into the water.”

He said that even while in the water, he didn’t feel overly threatened.

“There was a swirl in the water and even when I was in the water I didn’t feel like I was in too much danger.

"The guys I was paddling with just enclosed around me so if the shark was going to take me it would have had to have done so from right underneath. Then I just lay on another guy’s boat and he paddled me in,” he said.
