The man, who asked that his identity and those of his family be withheld for their safety, told News24 that he had returned to the family home after a meeting and found a strange car parked in the driveway.

"The gate was open and I parked in front of that vehicle, thinking it might have been visitors. My mother-in-law has a lot of friends," he said.

As he entered the home, he was confronted by a man with an assault rifle who pushed him to the floor.

"I was met with a guy with a big gun. I think it was an AK47 and they put me on the floor. They took me to the back room where my whole family was and they were all sitting on the bed," he said.

"They said they weren’t going to hurt us, but my father-in-law is elderly and has emphysema and couldn’t breathe. They were hitting him and my mother-in-law pleaded with them to let him have his oxygen."

While the family was locked in the room with their domestic helper, the gunmen raided the house and loaded their getaway car full of valuables.

Gunshots

At that point, the man was locked in a storeroom alone while his family was marched into the house.

"The next thing I heard was a whole lot of gunshots when they ran into the police outside. A policeman was at the door and he kicked the door down and I ran outside to find my family, I was so relieved that everyone was alright," he said.

One of the robbers was killed and another injured during the shoot-out, while a third managed to escape

The injured suspect was shot in the head.

The man said that his family was unhurt, but that his father-in-law was in hospital for an unrelated medical procedure.
