Durban – The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday backed Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s call for the SAHRC to investigate if psychiatric patients had died in provinces other than Gauteng.

"The department must not wait for a tragedy to occur in KwaZulu-Natal before it sits up and takes notice," party health spokesperson Ncamisile Nkwanyana said in a statement.

She said the deaths of 94 mentally ill patients after they were transferred from the Life Esidimeni facilities in Gauteng to several unlicensed NGOs last year, highlighted the poor state of the country’s mental health facilities.

The Star reported that Motsoaledi had asked the SA Human Rights Commission to look into the matter.

"The tragic deaths of about 100 psychiatric patients has sent shockwaves throughout the country and has exposed the lack of adequate and suitable facilities to cater for such patients at our hospitals," Nkwanyana said.
