Durban - The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday welcomed the suspension of embattled provincial police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

News24 on Thursday revealed that Ngobeni had been placed on suspension relating to her links with businessman Thoshan Panday.

The party called for her "swift removal" so that a "competent and trustworthy" commissioner can be appointed.

National chair Blessed Gwala said: "For the past two years we have been questioning the competence and integrity of Commissioner Ngobeni but our concerns fell on the deaf ears of the now suspended National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu in KZN."

"We could see that she was not fit for the job and that the morale of the police in our province was at an all-time low," Gwala added.

He said that the IFP had questioned Premier Senzo Mchunu when Ngobeni's contract was renewed last year, allowing her another five-year term "but he failed to provide an explanation".

"Soon thereafter her contract was covertly renewed. We do not believe that the Acting National Commissioner has sucked information out of his thumb to now suspend Ngobeni," he said.

"In spite of this suspension we still demand to know on what grounds and with what justification was Ngobeni’s contract renewed when it expired last year," Gwala said.

“There was a cloud hanging over her head for a long time and we as the IFP have been calling for her to be investigated.”
