Pietermaritzburg - Five illegal miners have died after a rockfall at a disused mine at Pongola on Friday.

It is believed the miners had explosives with them at the time a massive rockfall deposited about 40 tons of rock between them and the exit.

The mine management, paramedics and members of the SAPS K9 search-and-rescue unit from Pietermaritzburg attempted to reach the stricken miners at the old Klipwal gold mine.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said yesterday that the search was called off on Saturday, because it was too dangerous to go inside.

“Those who were suspected to be trapped inside are suspected to be dead.”

It is believed the miners had broken through the mine’s security gate at night to access the disused shaft and had been chipping away at pillars holding the roof up.

Attempts to contact management at the mine yesterday were unsuccessful.
