Durban – The recent upsurge in violence in Inchanga is a political problem that needs a political solution, the KwaZulu-Natal SACP said on Tuesday.

The party sent condolences to the family of Nontsikelelo Blose, a local SA Communist Party leader who was shot dead on Sunday.

“It is regrettable that the current outbreak of violence in Inchanga and elsewhere occurred against the backdrop of a repeated appeal by the SACP to address hotspots in the province. The case of Inchanga is a political case that requires a political solution,” the party said in a statement.

Forty-one people arrested on charges of public violence were expected to appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They were arrested on Monday, following two murders allegedly committed by ANC and SACP members.

On Sunday around 18:00, 40-year-old Blose was shot in the Fredville area. She died in hospital. An ANC member was shot and stoned to death on Monday morning.

In February, ANC member Bongani Hlatshwayo, 38, and SACP member Phillip Dlamini, 68, were killed during a public meeting at a sports ground in Inchanga.

The killings deepened divisions between the two tripartite alliance members. The SACP pulled out of electoral processes in the province ahead of the August 3 polls. The ANC Youth League called for the SACP's provincial secretary to step down.

The cases against five people arrested for the two murders in February were still pending. Blose was a key witness in the cases.
