Cape Town – National Union of Metalworkers of SA president Andrew Chirwa was on Monday nominated to lead the organisation for another four years.

Chirwa received nine nominations from various regions, with support from Mpumalanga, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

Numsa is holding its 10th national congress in Cape Town until Thursday.

The only position to be contested at the four-day congress was that of second deputy president, after it was indicated that first deputy Christine Olivier was not available for another term.

Basil Cele, the current second deputy, received eight nominations for the first deputy position.

Current general secretary Irvin Jim received 10 nominations for his position, while national treasurer Mphumzi Magungo got eight nominations.

Ruth Ntlokotse and Puleng Phaka would be vying for the second deputy president position, with 15 and two nominations respectively.

Karl Cloete received eight nominations for the deputy general secretary position.

All candidates had indicated their availability to contest the positions and results would be announced on Thursday.
