Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police officer was in a serious condition after he was shot and wounded by armed suspects who were trying to hijack a car in Mayfair on Tuesday, police said.

"He was shot in both legs as officers from the CCTV unit intercepted an attempted hijacking at the corner of 4th Avenue and Church Street, Mayfair, at about 14:20 today [Tuesday]," JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

"Armed suspects tried to hijack a Mercedes Benz car then shot at the JMPD patrol car and fled the scene in a silver Mercedes Benz car."

The officer was taken to Milpark Hospital.

Minnaar asked for anyone with information regarding the silver Mercedes with the registration YMC 433 GP to contact JMPD's control room on 011 375 5911.
