Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has assured motorists that their officers are not on strike.

In a statement on Monday evening, JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said: “JMPD management wants to thank officers for not heeding the call from the union to strike during this festive season when officers are needed most.”

Minnaar said all their officers who were meant to report for duty did so on New Year’s Eve.

“They worked diligently with the SAPS, EMS and Disaster Management in the Hillbrow and CBD where nine suspects [were] arrested for crimes which included rape, vehicle theft and possession of dangerous weapons; they also closed down two liquor outlets and helped to search six buildings which were identified as being problematic,” the statement read.

This comes after South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) announced last week that its 3 000 members would go on strike this week.

It is still unclear when Samwu intends on embarking on their strike.
