Johannesburg - ANC councillor Nonhlanhla Mthembu, who died after collapsing during proceedings of the Johannesburg city council on Monday, had devoted her life to serving her community, the party said.

Mthembu, 50, died shortly after nominations were announced for mayor. Two paramedics earlier helped her out of the hall.

ANC Gauteng spokesperson Nkenke Kekana said Mthembu, fondly known as “Black Diamond” and “Stompi”, was a longstanding member of the party and a councillor from 2011 to 2016.  She had been re-elected to serve another term, he said in a statement.

The DA expressed its condolences to Mthembu’s loved ones and the ANC.

“Her untimely death has left the DA caucus saddened. Her death will be a loss to our new council, and to our city,” the DA’s mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba said in a statement.

The cause of her death had not yet been determined.
