"Mama I made it," many exclaimed, a reference to Cassper Nyovest's song.

Bongani Makotla got 91% for mathematics and 83% for physical science, which he was excited about, although he was disappointed with his 65% mark for English.

He wanted to study electrical engineering at Wits University.

He said he had prepared well to get good results.

"I practiced maths and science very hard and attended extra lessons in the morning, afternoons, as well as on Saturdays. Having commitment to something helps and that is exactly what helped me. I knew that if I did well in maths and science my doors were going to open," he said.

The school obtained a 94% pass rate for the 2015 year. Principal Thulani Madonsela said 216 pupils wrote the final exams. Thirteen of them failed.

"We are the top achieving school in Soshanguve for a third year in a row," he said.
