Cape Town – One inmate has been killed and almost 30 have been injured in gang violence at the Boksburg Prison over the past six months, the justice ministry has said.

In a written reply to a question in Parliament, published on Tuesday, Justice Minister Michael Masutha said no officials had been killed or injured during the violence. One prisoner had been killed after he was stabbed in November.

Gangs attacked each other using padlocks, homemade knives and other sharpened objects.

Gangs involved include the RAF 3 (named after the UK's Royal Air Force as its members are considered a flight risk), Big 5, and the 26 and 28 gangs.

Masutha was replying to a question from the DA’s James Selfe, on the increase in gang violence at the prison.

Offenders who posed a risk to the safety of other inmates were placed in single cells. Efforts to deal with the increase in gang violence included gang profiling, Masutha said.

Although the violence was being investigated, most of the victims refused to lay criminal charges. Those who were found guilty would have their sentences prolonged.
