Durban – A man was on Tuesday found guilty of rape and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Kagiso Regional Magistrate's Court, Kagiso police said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said that on February 26, 2012, a woman and her boyfriend had been at a party at Extension 8.

Sibiya said the woman bumped into the accused, Mojalefa Arnold Moloko, who was hanging around the toilet. Moloko demanded that the woman leave with him and when she refused, he attacked and slapped her.

"He dragged and forced her to the nearest open space and a struggle ensued and the accused overpowered the victim and raped her."

The man was later arrested.

Kagiso regional Magistrate Reginald Dama said: "The law cannot allow a situation where defenceless women and children are not safe to even go to the bathroom.

"They need to be protected by the law from unfair and barbaric attacks. Such people, like the accused, do not deserve to be in the community."

West Rand police cluster commander Major General Annah Mateisie praised the police for making sure that the man was behind bars.
