Krejcir to wait months for appeal

2016-02-24 12:48

Johannesburg - Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and his five co-accused will have to spend a few more months in jail before they can launch their appeals against their convictions and sentences.

Johannesburg High Court Judge Collin Lamont told the court on Wednesday morning that he would only be available to deal with the applications in the second term of court, which begins in April.

He told the court he was not set down to deal with any criminal matter this term, but had found a way to squeeze the case in between other cases he was dealing with.

Prosecutor Louis Mashiane proposed that the matter be struck off the roll temporarily until a date was finalised.

A stern Lamont told the court he wanted the matter to come to an end.

"This matter needs to become final in all aspects," he told the court.

All legal council agreed to await Lamont's suggestion of an appropriate date in the second term of court.

Lamont sentenced Krejcir and Sandton businessman Desai Lupondo to an effective 35 years in jail for attempted murder, kidnapping and dealing drugs.

Siboniso Miya and three Hawks officers Jeff Nthoarane, Sam Maropeng and Jan Mofokeng were all sentenced to an effective 15 years for their role in the crime.

The sentencing was related to the kidnapping and tortures of Bheki Lukhele, whose brother Doctor had disappeared with 25 kgs of tik.

Doctor worked at a cargo company at O R Tambo International Airport.

The drugs were destined for Australia but were never found.
