Durban – A man was on Friday sentenced to life and 20 years imprisonment in the Pongola Regional Court for murder, attempted murder and kidnapping, the KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority said.

The sentences would run concurrently.

KwaZulu-Natal NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said in a statement that in June 2014 a five-year-old boy was kidnapped by Sibongiseni Nhlanhla Magagula, 25.

Magagula dragged the boy into a field, where he attempted to throttle him.

"His screams alerted a passer-by who ran to the scene. The accused fled, leaving the child behind."

Kara said Magagula also kidnapped and murdered another child - a four-year-old boy.

"The dismembered remains of the child were later discovered."

Kara said Magagula was sentenced to life for the murder, five years for each of the kidnapping charges, and 10 years for attempted murder.

Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, advocate Moipone Noko, said: "I feel that the sentence is appropriate given the circumstances of this case. As the NPA, we believe that justice has been done.

"However, the painful part is that an innocent child has lost his life. This sentence exhibits our stance that crime will not be tolerated."
