Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal firefighter has been celebrated for saving a 15-year-old girl from drowning at the weekend.

Kevin Lindsay, divisional commander of the Metro Fire and Rescue in Amanzimtoti, said he was proud of leading firefighter Stuart Jeacocks.

Lindsay said the fire department received a call at 11:34 on Saturday about a drowning at Mini Beach in Umgababa.

They found one patient semi-conscious on the beach. The teenager was floating in the water, about 100 metres from the shore.

Jeacocks entered the water and brought her to safety. ER24 paramedics resuscitated her and took her to Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi.

Lindsay said saving a life was rewarding and they were proud of Jeacocks.

A Facebook group called Durban Fire Unofficial, congratulated him.

"There is no 'I' in 'Team'. From the first time the call is made to the time the incident is terminated, everyone plays a huge part," Jeacocks said in a post to the group.
