Durban – A hijacker who shot his victim and stole his vehicle was sentenced to 20 years in prison, police said on Wednesday.

Mfundo Lushaba, 21, from KwaDabeka, was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for hijacking by the Pinetown Regional Court on Monday. He was sentenced to another five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said that on April 1, 2014, the 60-year-old victim was waiting for his wife in his Toyota Double Cab bakkie outside the Pinetown Post Office when he was approached by an armed suspect who demanded the car keys.

"The victim was shot in the upper arm and his vehicle was stolen. A police vehicle that was in the vicinity responded to the complaint."

Magudulela said police chased the hijacked vehicle until it crashed into a tree in New Germany.

"The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and was arrested."

Acting KwaZulu-Natal commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa lauded the police for the conviction.

"We hope the sentence will send a strong message to other criminals out there," he said.
