Durban – A 35-year-old man who attempted to force a can of fish into his wife’s private parts was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in the Newcastle Regional Court, police said on Thursday.

"He raped her and tried to insert a can of fish in her private part. The accused was accusing his wife of having an affair with another man. She was also assaulted by the accused," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said.

According to Zwane, the incident occurred in May 2010, when the man woke his sleeping 33-year-old wife and accused her of having an affair.

Zwane said that, after an investigation, he was arrested for rape and assault. Upon his arrest, however, it was discovered that the man was also wanted for murder.

"He was also charged for that murder and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for that murder."

In a separate incident, a 26-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and kidnapping of an 11-year-old girl.

Zwane said that on October 5, 2010, the then 11-year-old victim was on her way home in the Charlestown area outside Newcastle, when she was accosted by the man.

"He dragged her into the nearby bushes and raped her."

Zwane said that a case of rape was opened and the suspect was arrested on the day of the attack.

"He appeared in the Newcastle Regional Court several times until he was successfully prosecuted and sentenced."

Acting provincial commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa on Thursday warned that authorities would ensure that sexual offenders were brought to justice.

"All sexual offenders will be sent to prison indefinitely so that they can face the consequences for their actions. This should be a warning to those who think of committing such crime that the police will make sure that criminals are brought to book," he said.
