Durban - While three people were killed in a bus accident in Chatsworth on Monday, several others were saved due to the swift response by medics and one doctor in particular, KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said.

Three people were killed and dozens injured when the fully laden bus overturned on the M1 Higginson Highway early on Monday morning.

Dhlomo said that a helicopter, as well as 15 ambulances, had responded to the scene.

"We greatly appreciate the zeal and preparedness shown by our emergency personnel in responding to this accident.

"It was also very fortunate that in that area where the accident happened, we had a senior doctor who is based at Nkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital who immediately got involved.

"Many lives were saved as Dr Hardcastle assisted with the on-site emergency operations before the injured were dispatched to various hospitals in Durban," he said.
