Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal EMS paramedic was killed when an ambulance, transporting a mother and child to hospital in Chatsworth, collided with another vehicle, the provincial health MEC said on Sunday.

“The paramedics were transporting a mother and her baby from Hlengisizwe Clinic to RK Khan Hospital when they got involved in an accident with a sedan at Higginson Highway… in Chatsworth,” said MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo in a statement about the accident, which occurred on Saturday.

He said a 35-year-old paramedic, as well as the driver of the other sedan, had sadly died on the scene.

The driver of the ambulance in which the paramedic was travelling was left seriously injured.

The mother and baby were not injured but “as a cautionary measure”, were being kept under observation.

“We are deeply saddened by the death and injury of these committed paramedics who got involved in a collision whilst on a mission to save a life of a mother and her baby,” Dhlomo said.

The MEC said officials from the EMS service had been sent to visit the family of the deceased.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
