KZN police nab 959 suspects in festive season crackdown

Durban – Festive season operations in KwaZulul-Natal have, thus far, resulted in the arrest of just under 1 000 suspects, police have said on Thursday.

In a statement, police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said the arrests followed operations between November 30 and December 6.

"These operations included cordon and search, tracing of wanted suspects, and high police visibility operations.

"A total of 959 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, house robbery, hijacking, theft of motor vehicles, assault, kidnapping, fraud, stock theft, shop lifting, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of drugs."

Gwala added that, during operations, a large quantity of drugs and alcohol were seized. The arrested suspects have appeared in various courts around the province.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, congratulated the police on the successes achieved and said that such operations would continue throughout the festive season.

"The deployment of the members will be maintained in various areas throughout the festive season," she said.
