Cape Town – A Laingsburg police officer, who allegedly raped a woman in custody, was granted R1000 bail by the Laingsburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

His case was postponed to February 28, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.

The officer was arrested and charged with rape and pointing a firearm after an identity parade was conducted on Friday, December 2. He may not be identified until he has pleaded.

He allegedly threatened the woman, 20, with a firearm and raped her in the cells of the local police station. She had been detained for theft.

“While she was still in the police cells, a police official entered and went straight to her. He grabbed, kissed and undressed her. They struggled with each other,” Dlamini said at the time.

The officer's firearm apparently fell in the struggle. He allegedly grabbed it, pointed it at her, and told her he would shoot her if she cried.

She opened a case of rape the next day.

Anti-abuse activist Lucinda Evans previously said someone had tracked her down in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, 280km from the rural town, and alerted her to the incident via text messages.

She was able to talk to the woman over the phone briefly. She was apparently admitted to hospital because of her injuries.

Evans said the woman had since been released from hospital and was thrilled that a suspect had been arrested.

Evans, who runs the non-profit organisation Philisa Abafazi Bethu, said many people complained about secondary victimisation at police stations.

She would keep a close eye on the investigation and make sure the woman received support.
