Sports lover Abby Daugherty of The Wykeham Collegiate is the latest monthly winner of The Witness/SuperSport Let’s Play competition, which promotes healthy and outdoor activity among primary school pupils.

This 13-year-old Hilton resident’s personal motto is “Live it, dream it, do it” and this has seen her participate enthusiastically and at a high level in a number of sports codes, including hockey, squash and swimming.

The Grade 7 pupil is a worthy winner for the month of June in the newspaper’s ongoing competition and has competed in sports events at local, regional and national level.

She has been to Potchefstroom and Bloemfontein for hockey, Sasolburg for swimming, and Cape Town for indoor hockey just over the past two years representing school and province.

She was also involved in level 3 swimming for KZN Under-13 A Inland recently.

“What a fabulous surprise to win,” said Abby. “I would like to improve and go higher in sport, but have fun, as well.”

Former South African Olympic swimming sensation Penny Heyns is one of her heroes.

She said she enjoyed the company of others and liked to make new friends, something that could happen easily and in a safe way during sports events and tours.

Abby and other monthly winners receive a Let’s Play hamper filled with goodies to the value of R700, as well as an opportunity to be featured in the newspaper. The competition will run until the end of November, after which an overall winner will be selected and announced as the SuperSport Let’s Play Star of the Year 2017 awards.

The final awards will be broadcast on the Let’s Play programme on SuperSport, where winners will walk away with fabulous prizes.

Names of nominated candidates should be sent to The Witness sports editor at sport@witness.co.za by the 20th of each month.

The deserving player will be chosen as the SuperSport Let’s Play Star of the Month by an independent panel of four sport experts. Any school can enter their candidates for any sport.

The nomination/s must include their name/s, age and achievements, as well as the entrants’ contact details.
