Polokwane - Five men who robbed and killed a Ga-Malebogo traditional leader have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Limpopo High Court, the NPA said on Tuesday.

They were found guilty of killing and robbing Chief Job Lebogo in October last year, provincial spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said in a statement.

Lebogo’s bakkie and an undisclosed amount of cash were stolen.

Moabelo Bryan Motsoko, 22, orchestrated the plan to rob foreign-owned shops in Ga-Maleboho village, outside Senwabarwana. He recruited Sello Mokobedi, 32, Masipa Mabeba, 33, Sello Manganye, and Thabo Mohale, 32.

A sixth suspect was recruited, but refused to participate.

On their way to the shops they were planning to rob, the men changed their minds and decided to target Lebogo. They picked him up and drove him to his home, where they demanded money from his family. A struggle ensued with members of Lebogo’s family, during which Lebogo was shot.

The gunmen fled the scene with money and Lebogo’s car. The car was later found abandoned on a road.

"They abandoned the vehicle in the bush and called a getaway vehicle. By then, community members had already reported the matter to the police," Malabi-Dzhangi said.

Police gave chase and tracked the gang down in Dendron. The driver, who escaped and unknowingly flagged down a detective while seeking a lift, became a State witness. He was not present during the murder.
