Malamulele - A Limpopo ward councillor has opened a case of defamation against a fellow community member following a spat over committee appointments.

Ward 24 councillor Lazarus Baloyi laid the charge against Reuben Makamu at the Malamulele police station on Tuesday. He claimed that Makamu had openly called for revolt against him on a local community station, Malamulele Radio.

Baloyi claimed the incitement stemmed from his convening a community meeting on Sunday, at which people were nominated to serve on ward executive committees.

Baloyi claimed that Makamu had ruined his reputation in the area and that he was now afraid that residents might kill him or burn his house down.

"I'm no longer safe in my own ward. Makamu has to understand this is a democracy and in a democracy leaders are elected by people. They don't elect themselves. He is angry because he is not part of the ward executive committee. That's why he's spreading rumours and defaming my character," Baloyi said.

He said that his "political enemies" had sent Makamu to oppose his election as councillor.

Baloyi was an ANC ward councillor in Thulamela prior to the merging of the Malamulele, Vuwani and Hlanganani municipalities to form the Collins Chabane Municipality. The merger followed complaints from Malamulele residents that Thulamela only channelled services to Tshivenda, and not Tsonga-speaking, people.

Baloyi said Makamu had no constituency to speak of, but Makamu said he had gone on radio on behalf of residents angered by nepotism in the ward.

"We can't allow their ward to be run like a spaza shop," he said.

"I went on radio to represent community members because the process used to nominate ward committee members was not correct. The ward councillor and his wife only chose their friends or people close to them. Baloyi also called the meeting too late for all community members to come and have a voice," Makamu said.
