Cape Town - The R623m in questionable spending the Auditor General found in the books of the Limpopo health department was not wasted, the department has said.

The department said investigators found R623m was not irregular expenditure, while a further R451m was condoned.

Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba and department head Sipho Kabane made a presentation to Parliament's health portfolio committee last week, to update MPs on its financial status following the Auditor General's report for the 2014/15 financial year.

An irregular expenditure committee was established to adjudicate on non-compliance. The department said workshops had started to help officials deal with fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure.

Some of the challenges facing the department currently included the establishment of its Ideal Clinic initiative and an insufficient budget and human resources.

The Auditor General found a total of R2.1bn in irregular expenditure in his audit of 18 Limpopo departments in the 2014/15 financial year.

Committee chairperson Mary-Ann Dunjwa said the meeting was the first of many and MPs would continue to consult the department on its progress.
