Johannesburg - A man has been burnt to death by an angry mob in Ga-Matlala, just outside Polokwane, after he was accused of raping and killing a 24-year-old woman at the weekend, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Karabo Kgomo's half naked body was found lying on the side of the road in Tibanefontein village on Sunday morning at around 07:15, spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said.

"Indications are that the woman was assaulted with a brick on the head. It is also suspected that she might have been raped."

Otto said residents in the area accused 23-year-old Jeffery Tumelo of being responsible for Kgomo's death. They then mobilised themselves and went looking for him.

"He attempted to flee from the crowd, but he was overpowered, assaulted and set alight. He died on the scene," she said.

No arrests had yet been made for either crimes.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola condemned the incident, urging community and religious leaders to work with the police to bring perpetrators of both murders to book.

"We cannot allow members of the community to take the law into their own hands and brutally kill another human being to justify the killing of another," Masemola said.
