Johannesburg - The Limpopo police have launched a manhunt for a group of community members who attacked church pastors and their congregation in Mecklenburg outside Burgersfort, Limpopo on Sunday.

Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said it is alleged that members of the Devine Church from different locations, arrived at Ntswaneng village for the official opening of the church on Sunday.

“When they arrived, there were some of the locals in the church. They started attacking the church members for no apparent reason,” Ngoepe said.

Ngoepe said the motive behind the attack was not clear.

Some of the members had to flee for their lives.

During the incident, three cars were burnt to ashes and others were severely damaged, Ngoepe said.

Church members who sustained serious injuries were taken to hospital.

He said a number of members had made their way back to Seshego in buses and others went to the police station to report the incident and for safety reasons.

No arrest had been made.
