Pietermaritzburg - A Wykeham Collegiate pupil is flying the Pietermaritzburg flag high as the only girl in the Midlands selected for the Errigal Youth Cycling Tour in Ireland.

Grade 8 pupil Sarah Ryan (13) lands in Ireland today for the cycling tour with 15 other cyclists from KwaZulu-Natal.

Sarah was one of four KZN girls who were selected to cycle on the tour and is the only pupil from the Midlands to have been chosen.

The 2016 Errigal Youth Cycling Tour in Ireland is a three-day race with five other countries competing for the title.

Sarah was on her way to King Shaka International Airport yesterday when The Witness spoke to her.

“I am very excited for the tour, but also very nervous as it is my first time overseas,” said the teen.

“I know the group I am travelling with well. We are all friends so I am glad for that.”

She said there had been a series of road races in KwaZulu-Natal as part of the selection process for the tour and had discovered, much to her delight, two months ago that she had been chosen to participate.

“I have been training very hard since last year — five days a week for about two hours,” she said.

“There is a lot of pressure on me to do well but I am just honoured to have been selected.”

Sarah said she had “high hopes” for the tour and would arrive back in the country on August 5.

Her mother, Jane, said she and her husband, Gavin, were “very proud” of her daughter’s achievement.

“Sarah loves what she does and is great at it,” said the mother.

“She spent a lot of time training and was very committed to it.”

The Wykeham Collegiate marketing manager Kerry Aldum said the school was proud and wished Sarah well on the tour.
