Cape Town - DA leader Mmusi Maimane remembered the trapped workers at Lily Mine ahead of his statement in the debate on President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address.

"Before I begin, I would like to offer my thoughts and prayers to the families of the workers trapped underground at the Lily Mine in Mpumalanga," said Maimane.

"We cannot begin to imagine your pain and anguish these past eleven days. We stand with you as a nation, and I hold you and your loved ones in my prayers."

Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyerende and Yvonne Mnisi were working in a container when parts of the mine near Barberton fell into a sinkhole.

After days of trying to reach them, a large concrete structure at the entrance of the mine tunnel and soil from a hill next to the sinkhole broke off and fell into the same hole in which the container is buried, halting rescue efforts while experts assess the stability of the site.
