Malema 'harassed' by 12 policemen armed with rifles

2016-04-03 22:20

Johannesburg - EFF leader Julius Malema said he had been harassed by 12 armed police officers who had forced him out of his car near the Grayston off-ramp on Sunday night.

At 21:23, Malema tweeted: "Just survived police harassment at Grayston off-ramp, 12 police men pointed me with rifles and forced me out of the car..."

Ten minutes later, the party's official account released a short statement saying Malema had been stopped by a white unmarked van near the off-ramp, immediately after that he was surrounded by about 10 cars.

"They then all came out pointing guns at his car. The entire intersection was blocked, isolating him. But he came out and they all did nothing , claiming it was a mistake," the statement said further.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said he was not aware of the incident as it was not immediately clear whether a case had been opened with the police.

"I won't know what the police are doing outside, I will only know once a case has been opened," Dlamini said.

Both Malema and EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi could not immediately be reached for comment.
