Johannesburg - A 4-year-old was killed after she was hit by a car in Brenthurst, on the East Rand, metro police said on Monday.

A 29-year-old Brakpan man, who was allegedly driving the vehicle on Saturday, was arrested following the accident at the intersection of Prince George and Muir streets.

According to Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred Kgasago, police became suspicious at the scene when they saw there was a skid mark from only one of the vehicle’s tyres.

"Preliminary investigations of the scene pointed to the fact that the Mazda was speeding and with defective service brakes as only one wheel skid mark was visible," he said.

It is believed that the man was unable to bring the vehicle to a halt before hitting the child.

The driver was detained on charges of culpable homicide and reckless driving at the Brakpan police station. The vehicle was impounded for further investigations.

The man was due to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court soon.
