Cape Town – A man with a slew of criminal cases to his name is set to appear in court after being arrested near the scene of a cash-in-transit robbery, the Western Cape Hawks said on Sunday.

Security guards were busy loading money into an ATM at Belmont Centre in Kraaifontein on Friday when they were accosted, said spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha.

Three armed suspects robbed them of their firearms and four bags of cash before fleeing the scene.

No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained.

At least five people were involved in the robbery. The possibility of the security guards' complicity in the crime was being investigated.

After arriving on scene, Hawks detectives found one of the getaway vehicles abandoned in Wallacedene.

The Opel bakkie had been hijacked earlier this month.

Detectives then found a second vehicle, a VW Caravelle, abandoned in La Boheme Road.

The city’s law enforcement officers apprehended a 38-year-old man next to the vehicle after he unsuccessfully tried to outrun them.

The man is believed to be facing two murder cases, an attempted murder case and a case relating to a previous cash-in-transit robbery, said Ramovha.

At the time of his arrest on Friday, he was apparently out on bail.

He was set to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing a charge of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.

More charges were likely to be added.

His alleged accomplices were still at large.

“We urge members of the public not to confront them as they are considered armed and dangerous, but to merely report their whereabouts to authorities,” said Ramovha.
