Pretoria - A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his girlfriend for failing to give him money, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the 30-year-old man from Dutywa in the Eastern Cape raped his 25-year-old girlfriend on Thursday night at town's GPO informal settlement.

"The allegation is that the suspect went to visit his girlfriend on the night in question. He found the victim with her two [female] friends. The suspect demanded to be given some money," said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The friends are said to have left the couple alone.

"When the victim did not have money, she was accosted and raped by the suspect," said Manatha.

The man was arrested on Sunday on a charge of rape. He is expected to appear before the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
