Bloemfontein – A 26-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly hacked his girlfriend to death with an axe at Manona Farm in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

At about 01:05 on Saturday, the couple's neighbours rushed to the house where the woman was screaming, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

When the police arrived on scene, the woman was found with multiple injuries to her body.

The man was found holding an axe that was believed to have been used to murder his 34-year-year-old girlfriend, said Manatha.

"We suspect the couple might have had a misunderstanding which led to the murder."

The man has been charged with murder.

He is expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate Court on Monday.
