Cape Town - The 23-year-old man who was taken in for questioning in connection with the murder of 11-year-old Shamonique Claasen has been arrested, Western Cape police said.

Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that the suspect, believed to be a relative, was to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after being charged.

Claasen was found under a bed, wrapped in a blanket, on Monday evening.

Her mother reported her missing at the Paarl East police station on Sunday. Police and her relatives had failed to find her during a search that day.

A family member "picked up a smell" in their home the next day and found her body.

A post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
