Cape Town - A 33-year-old man was killed and a 16-year-old boy injured in a shooting in Manenberg, Western Cape police said on Monday.

The shooting took place at Lilian Court, in the gang hotspot, on Sunday, police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

Cases of murder and attempted murder were being investigated.

Lansdowne anti-crime activist Hanif Loonat attributed the recent spate of shootings in some Cape Town suburbs to what he called the annual “pre-Christmas turf war” among drug dealers.

“You will see every year between October and November, there are gang shootings,” he said.

The dealers vie for the extra cash many punters had available to spend on drugs around Christmas time.

“And then in December it is very quiet."

Residents of suburbs like Athlone and Steenberg were so used to shootings, that they would come out so see who was shooting who.

He said the only way to bring this to an end was for a community imbizo to rid the suburbs of gangsters, from within.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old man was shot dead in Wale Street, Cape Town, shortly after 22:00 on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said.

The circumstances were not clear and no arrests had been made.
