Cape Town - A man was gunned down near the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning, in a suspected gang-related shooting.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the 24-year-old man was standing opposite the courthouse, on Myrtle Road, when the suspect approached and shot him.

According to a source, the man managed to flee to a nearby house, where he collapsed and died of a chest wound.

Van Wyk said the alleged gunman, 25, ran in the direction of Elsies River. Police officers who were in the vicinity caught him. The gun was found in a dustbin.

The men are understood to belong to two rival gangs, police told News24.

The man would appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court once charged. He faces charges of murder, and illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.

Two years ago, a man was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting outside the same court. The occupants of a grey Toyota Quantum shot dead the 19-year-old Bonteheuwel man on the corners of Myrtle and Jakkalsvlei roads.
