Johannesburg - A man believed to be in his fifties was shot while waiting for a pupil outside the Rivonia Primary School gates in Sandton on Tuesday, Emer-G-Med said.

Spokesperson Max Cohen said the man had been shot after an alleged armed robbery and suspected attempted hijacking.

"He sustained a gunshot wound to one of his legs during a scuffle between him and the armed assailants," Cohen said adding that the man was in serious condition.

The suspect fled with the man's watch.

The incident happened at about 13:50 on Tuesday afternoon.

Police and the school could not be reached for comment.
