Pietermaritzburg - A case in which a Kokstad man is suing Margate Private Hospital and one of its doctors for R20 million came before the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday.

Patrick Jones Mkhize instituted the law suit against the hospital and Dr B.A. Singh after he allegedly suffered a stroke while undergoing a procedure at the hospital on May 15, 2011.

This allegedly occurred when a central venous catheter was inserted into an arterial blood vessel during surgery and medication was administered to him.

Mkhize says he now suffers from poor balance and weakness on his left side as a result, has double vision, an inability to read or write, has difficulty swallowing and chokes on his food, and also suffers from other physical complications.

The hospital and Singh are opposing the application based both on the contention that the claim was not filed within the time period prescribed by law, and that Dr Bikash Ramchurran, not Singh, was the doctor who performed the alleged procedure on Mkhize.
