Durban - A man has been trapped in a trench at a residential property in Kloof, Durban, for more than five hours, paramedics said on Thursday.

Paramedics were alerted to the incident around at 14:00, and when they arrived on the scene they found the 30-year-old man trapped in soil from his shoulders down, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"It is understood that he was busy digging a foundation area when the walls collapsed onto him," Vermaak said.

He said the fire department, police and other emergency services were on the scene helping to stabilise the ground in order to free the man.

"The man is talking to the paramedics and appears to be in a stable condition, despite the circumstances," Vermaak said.

More resources were dispatched to the scene shortly after 19:00 to relieve the rescuers and provide extra equipment.
