Johannesburg -  A man was shot in the head when he allegedly tried to hijack a police vehicle in Alberton on Monday afternoon.

He was shot while trying to drive away with the car on the N3, police sources told News24. 

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the car veered off the road during a shootout between police and the would-be hijacker. The police officer who was in the car sustained minor injuries.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital. A second person was arrested.
